Arthur J. Lidsky, AICP, FAAAS

Arthur became president of DOBER LIDSKY MATHEY in 1988 and has served as a planning consultant for colleges and universities since 1971.  In this time, he has participated in several hundred assignments. For the three years prior to his consulting work, he was Assistant Director of Long-range Planning for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Examples of campus planning includes work: Austin Peay State University, Clemson University, College of the Holy Cross, College of Wooster, Covenant College, Furman University, Harvard Graduate School of Education, Harvard School of Public, Health, McCallie School, Middle Tennessee State University, Spelman College, St. Lawrence University, Stetson University, Union College, and Vassar College.

Over 80 science and engineering studies and programs including: Carleton College, Colgate University, College of Wooster, Georgia Tech, Hamilton College, Lafayette University, Syracuse University, Tennessee Tech University , Trinity University, University of Chicago, and UNC Charlotte. Facility Programs for new campuses include the Aga Khan University in Pakistan, The American University in Cairo, Asian University for Women in Bangladesh, Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology in Skolkovo, Russia, University of Botswana in Maun, Botswana, the NYU Abu Dhabi Campus, Cyprus Metropolitan University, Universidad Panamericana, Mexico, and IPADE, Mexico. Space needs assessment for many campuses including Cornell University, LSU, and Ohio State.

Arthur has served on facility review panels for the National Science Foundation (NSF); and has been a Principal Investigator for a NSF study that identified an ideal planning process and facility standards for secondary school science, math, and technology education programs. He has given lectures, presentations, and invited papers on campus planning at such organizations as Society for College and University Planning (SCUP), the Council for Undergraduate Research (CUR), the International Association for College Unions, No Name Facility Conference, Quality Education for Minorities Network (QEM), and the Municipal Art Society of New York. He has been a faculty member of Project Kaleidoscope (PKAL) from 1992-2010, and has been the only non-institutional member on the PKAL National Steering Committee.

Through his writing and lectures, Arthur teaches other professionals, college and university administrators, and faculty about planning and the campus planning process. He has taught campus planning as a faculty member of SCUP’s Integrated Planning Institute-the three-day workshop is Step 2 of a three-step certificate program. Arthur was a leader in creating the Institute and its curriculum. In 2016, he was awarded the Society for College and University Planning Distinguish Service Award for the foundational work on the SCUP Planning Institute.

Arthur has contributed articles to numerous professional publications, including: The New England Journal of Higher Education, New Directions for Higher Education, Facilities Manager/APPA (The Association of Higher Education Facilities Officers), Dean & Provost, The Chronicle of Higher Education, College Planning and Management, Planning Higher Education. It is noteworthy that as a non-academic, he was elected Fellow to the American Association for the Advancement of Science (FAAAS), 2012 “for distinguished contributions to shaping the higher education landscape through integrative attention in planning cultural, intellectual, and physical environments for learning.” He was also chosen to receive the Architecture Alumni Achievement Award for 2014 by the College of Art and Architecture at Clemson University “in recognition of your outstanding creative and professional achievement”. In 2006 he was presented with the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP): Founder’s Award for exceptional achievement in Higher Education Planning. He was also chosen to receive the Architecture Alumni Achievement Award for 2014 by the College of Art and Architecture at Clemson University “in recognition of your outstanding creative and professional achievement”.

George G. Mathey, AICP

George, a key member of the firm since 1986, became a principal at DOBER LIDSKY MATHEY in 2002. Over these years, he has participated in more than 190 planning assignments for DLM’s college and university clients. Through his work on 65 campus planning studies, and 115 facility planning studies, he has developed a particular strength in space utilization; strategic space needs projection and facility programming. While much of his work is with liberal arts institutions, George has also been involved in all of DLM’s international projects over the past decade as well as in work with the largest research university clients, gaining a broad perspective of a wide range of campus planning and space needs issues.

George shares his experience with others through seminars and presentations to students and practitioners. The most recent of these was a presentation at the 2021 national conference of the Society for College and University Planning on “Effective, participatory, data driven strategies for 21st century research-intensive institutions”. Other presentations include, “Defining and Implementing a Space Management Ecosystem”, another at the 2013 SCUP national meeting on “Implementing Strategic Planning through Space Planning”, “Facility Programming for Sustainability” and “The US News & World Report’s Rankings and Institutional Space Resources”.

A selection of recent projects George has contributed to include: campus planning for Belmont Hill School, Carroll College, Cornell College, Cyprus International University, Delgado Community College, Harvard Graduate School of Education, Harvard Department of Athletics, Harvard School of Public Health, Lesley University, Morehouse School of Medicine, Samford University, The College of Wooster, University of the Incarnate Word; space utilization studies and office audit for Cornell University, and Georgia Tech; existing space analysis, space needs projection and reallocation planning for the Connecticut State University system, Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, the Ohio State University, Rochester Institute of Technology, the University of Hong Kong, University of Massachusetts Lowell, Valdosta State University, Westfield State University; and facility programming at Binghamton University, Holyoke Community College, Kuwait University, Marist College, Penn State Altoona, Rutgers University, Springfield Technical Community College, Tri-County Technical College, USMA West Point, Worcester State University and for the American University in Cairo, Egypt and Universidad Panaméricana, Mexico City.
